Rolex GMT-Master Yellow Gold "Bakelite" - 98.000€

  • The Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is a landmark timepiece in the history of watchmaking, recognized as the first GMT-Master introduced in 1955. Designed for Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) pilots, it helps them track multiple time zones during long-haul flights. This model establishes Rolex’s legacy in dual-time watches, making the GMT-Master an essential tool for aviation professionals and global travelers.

The 6542 features a 38mm case and runs on the automatic Rolex caliber 1036, later upgraded to the 1065 and 1066 movements. Its most distinctive element is the 24-hour bezel, allowing wearers to read a second time zone with the help of the 24-hour hand. Initially crafted from Bakelite with a luminous insert, the bezel is later replaced by aluminum due to its fragility. Examples of Bakelite as well-preserved as the one we are offering here are extremely rare, making this model even more special. The stainless steel model had the iconic blue and red bezel while the 18 ct gold model had a brown bezel, matching the brown dial. Speaking of the brown dial, it features distinctive "nipple" indices, which add a stunning brilliance that matches beautifully with the alpha-style hands.

Unlike later models, the 6542 lacks crown guards, giving it a sleek and refined silhouette.

The GMT-Master 6542 gains further fame when it appears on the wrist of Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, reinforcing its status as an iconic timepiece.

Though production ends in 1959, the 6542 remains one of the most sought-after Rolex sports models, highly valued by collectors for its historical significance, rarity, and unmistakable design.
