The Rolex Daytona Reference 16520 is a legendary timepiece that marked a turning point in the history of the Daytona collection. Introduced in 1988, this model was the first automatic Daytona, powered by a modified Zenith "El Primero" movement, making it one of the most sought-after chronographs among collectors.

Before the introduction of the 16520, Rolex had exclusively produced manual-wind Daytona models. However, with the rising demand for automatic chronographs, Rolex turned to Zenith, a Swiss watchmaker renowned for its high-frequency "El Primero" movement. Rolex extensively modified the movement, reducing its frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour to enhance durability and maintenance intervals. The result was the Rolex Caliber 4030, a highly reliable and precise automatic chronograph movement.

The "Zenith" Cosmograph Daytona feature a larger 40 mm case, a sapphire crystal (a first for the Daytona), and a more modern dial design with applied hour markers and subdials with contrasting rings. The tachymeter scale on the bezel was also updated, making it easier to read. These aesthetic and technical upgrades helped redefine the Daytona as both a high-performance tool watch and a luxury statement piece.

The model we have here is equipped with a very rare and unusual dial that has been completely patinated turning into a very unique all black dial without any marking on the dial nor the counters.
