The Rolex “Bubbleback” is one of the earliest automatic wristwatches produced by Rolex, manufactured mainly from the 1930s to the mid-1950s. Its nickname comes from the rounded, protruding caseback, designed to house Rolex’s early self-winding movement at a time when most watches were still manually wound. Building on the waterproof Oyster case (1926) and the Perpetual rotor system (1931), the Bubbleback helped establish Rolex as a leader in durable, everyday wristwatches.
Typically small by modern standards and produced in steel, gold, or two-tone versions with many dial variations, these watches were both practical and technologically advanced for their era. As movement technology improved and became thinner, the need for the domed back disappeared, and the Bubbleback design was gradually phased out by the mid-1950s. Today, it is highly valued by collectors as a key milestone in the development of the modern automatic wristwatch and an important chapter in Rolex history.
