Launched in 1997, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut was designed to appeal to a younger audience, offering a sportier alternative to the legendary Nautilus while maintaining the brand's signature elegance and quality.

In the 1990s, demand for more casual, robust luxury watches suited to active lifestyles was on the rise. Patek Philippe, already renowned for the Nautilus – an iconic sports model introduced in 1976 – sought to expand its offerings with an even more contemporary, bold, and accessible watch. While the Nautilus was admired for its distinctive design, it remained relatively exclusive and classic. The Aquanaut was thus created to meet the needs of modern luxury sport enthusiasts.  

The Aquanaut stands out with a design inspired by the Nautilus, featuring an octagonal case with subtly rounded edges. However, it also has unique characteristics, such as its composite rubber strap (a synthetic material resistant to salt, UV rays, and tearing), which gives the watch a sporty and contemporary look. Nicknamed "Tropical" for its resilience in extreme conditions, this strap was an innovation for the brand. The Aquanaut's dial also features a unique checkered pattern, adding a dynamic and modern touch. Initially available in a 36 mm version, the watch quickly evolved to include larger versions, such as the 40,8 mm or 42,2 mm models, better suited to current trends in larger men’s watches.

Introduced in 1998, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5065 represents one of the earliest and most emblematic interpretations of the collection. Crafted in stainless steel, its elegant 38 mm rounded octagonal case combines refined proportions with a distinctly sporty character.

The watch features the iconic black embossed dial with its signature pattern, complemented by luminous Arabic numerals and hands. Its distinctive black composite “Tropical” strap perfectly enhances the contemporary yet timeless design.

Powered by the automatic calibre 315 SC, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the reference 5065 beautifully embodies Patek Philippe's ability to combine sophisticated watchmaking with understated elegance. Now discontinued, it remains a particularly desirable reference among collectors of early Aquanaut models.
